HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Dauphin County Sheriff Nicholas Chimienti says he continues to field calls from victims who say they were scammed by people claiming to be his deputies.
“We continue to hear the same thing,” Chimienti said. “They are telling people they have to pay a fine for not appearing for jury duty.”
Chimienti says they are told to pay more than $1,900 or they will be arrested.
One victim paid $500 before she realized she was being scammed. Another victim paid more than $1,900.
Chimienti says the bad guys stay on the phone until the victims go to a convenience store and put cash on MoneyPak cards and give them the codes to transfer funds.
“They don’t let up,” Chimienti said. “After they got the money, they said that there was another notice in the system indicating there was a second non-appearance issue and they needed another $1,900.”
Chimienti says the victim refused to pay despite being threatened that they would get arrested.
Deputies would never call anyone demanding payment.
