Power Packs: Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls for under $6!

The Power Packs Project recognizes the vital role that nutrition plays in the ability of children to learn in school. According to the Center on Hunger and Poverty hungry children have a hard time learning in school, have short attention spans and, suffer more absence due to illness.

In the kitchen today, Kim McDevitt was cooking up a meal for six people that costs less than $6.00! She showed us her recipe for Unstuffed Cabbage Rolls.

Unstuffed Cabbage Roll

Serves 6


1 pound ground beef or turkey

1 onion

1 small cabbage or ½ large

1 can tomato sauce or two cans tomato soup

½ cup water

2 cloves garlic (optional)

Salt and pepper


Wash and chop the cabbage. Over medium heat brown the onion and ground turkey. Drain and discard the grease. Add the cabbage, tomato sauce, water, garlic and salt and pepper.  Cook in slow cooker on low for several hours.
