Creature Feature: Macleay Spectre

Dan Babbit of the Hershey Gardens joined us once more with a special bug known as a Macleay’s Spectre. It serves as a mimic to surrounding objects.

“This insect mimics a seed as an egg and mimics an ant as a nymph – – then mimics a plant as an adult,” tells Dan.

These critters are part of the “Plants or Insects?” display at Hershey Gardens. Here, you can observe other mimicking insects to understand how both species have been evolving together.

The gardens are open every Saturday and Sunday from 9 am to 5pm. For additional information, visit HersheyGardens.org.
