Surgeon General: E-cigarettes are a public health threat

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) – The US surgeon general says electronic cigarettes are a public health threat to young people. The surgeon general’s newest report says e-cigarettes are now the most commonly used tobacco product among young people including over 3 million middle and high school students.

Many e-cigarettes have nicotine which can lead to addiction, though the nicotine level is typically lower than what’s inside a traditional cigarette. The use of these e-cigs could lead people to use other tobacco products.

The Vault, a smoke shop in Northampton, says they’ve seen a different trend. Rather than young people, more adults have picked up these e-cigarettes to actually try and quit smoking.

Joshua Trzepla, The Vault, manager told 22News, “The adults, they’re almost exclusively trying to quit smoking cigarettes for 10, 20, 30 years, and want an alternative.”

Trzepla says the shop has sold more nicotine-free e-cigarettes to young people more than any other group. The F-D-A is still working on establishing regulations on e-cigarettes.
