MIDDLETOWN, Pa. (WHTM) – Service dogs in training got “paws-on” airport experience over the weekend.
Harrisburg International Airport on Saturday hosted about 50 dogs from Susquehanna Service Dogs of Grantville. The dogs are being trained to assist people with disabilities.
The dogs worked through multiple stations in the airport. They went through security, practiced stairs and elevators, and even went on the runway and boarded a plane.
“The pat-down helped the dogs experience having their harness on and having someone else touch them and go up and under their vest,” said Kerry Wevodau, development director for Susquehanna Service Dogs. “They went through the detector as well. They had to walk across the tarmac. There were other airplanes coming and going. It exposed the dogs to a lot of sight, sounds, and experiences.
