DA sends warning about scam involving Reader’s Digest sweepstakes

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – The Franklin County district attorney’s office is sending a warning to residents about a scam involving Reader’s Digest.

A caller advises residents they have won a $1.5 million sweepstakes, but there is a processing fee that requires a debit or credit card.

Legitimate businesses do not ask for such information over the phone.

Residents are advised not to give financial information over the phone and if they have doubts about the legitimacy of a call, they should hang up and call the organization back.

At this time, the DA’s office is not aware of anyone who has provided their account numbers.

Anyone who believes they are a victim of a scam should call their local police department or Pennsylvania State Police.
