CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) – Midstate Congressman Lou Barletta’s office confirms he will be meeting with President-elect Donald Trump but won’t say why. Barletta (R) represents Pennsylvania’s 11th Congressional district. He served as a surrogate for Trump during the election and is now on his executive transition team.
Barletta was supposed to meet with Trump Monday, but that meeting was rescheduled for Tuesday because of a scheduling conflict.
A Politico Pro article reports Trump is considering Barletta as a candidate for U.S. Secretary of Transportation, but according to a recent CNN report, Trump has chosen Elaine Chao, the former labor secretary and wife of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Pennsylvania has the second highest number of structurally-deficient bridges in the nation. That’s something Carlisle resident Fredrick Swope would like to see addressed.
“There’s a lot of things that need to be addressed. I would hope that somebody who is from this area and understands those deficiencies would be able to actually do something about them and actually make a difference,” Swope said.
“These bridges were built a long time ago. We need to invest in them and eventually replace them,” said former PennDOT Secretary Barry Schoch.
Schoch believes Barletta would be a great fit for the position.
“He’s got great qualifications for it,” Schoch said. “He worked in the industry. His business was a line striping business, so he understands what this industry does, how private contractor bid for and compete for work and work with government.”
Barletta served as chair of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
“How often do you get an opportunity for someone from Pennsylvania to be a part of an executive leadership team? The fact that he’s even this close to the President-elect and having an opportunity to influence policy is tremendous for the Commonwealth,” Schoch said.
“It’s nice to be able to know that possibly somebody from our area and from Pennsylvania would be given the opportunity to speak on behalf of the people here,” Swope said.
