HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – The holiday shopping season is in full swing and a lot of people are looking for good deals.
Security expert Jon Sancenito says that people need to be aware of thieves who are on the lookout.
“There are individuals who walk through parking lots and look for packages and bags in cars,” said Sancenito. “They are looking of easy targets.”
Sancentio recommends that people put their items in the trunk if they plan on returning to the store or mall to do more shopping.
Sancenito says that people are in a hurry during the shopping season, and they may not pay attention when they are using their credit cards.
“If you do have to hand your card to someone, keep an eye on it. Make sure you know where it is,” said Sancenito. “Your card can be swiped by a device, and all of your information can be stolen.”
Sancenito says that a lot of people are shopping online, and that can be risky.
“They are also downloading apps to help them find the best deals,” said Sancenito. “Some of the apps are from bad companies.”
Sancenito says that an app that requires to access your contacts and GPS location could potentially be a scam waiting to happen. He says some emails will have links to great deals and bogus links will take people to a site that will require your credit card information, which could lead to more problems, including your card information being used for purchases by thieves.
