HERSHEY, Pa. (WHTM) – Heavy cream is one of the key ingredients in Barbara Hoffmaster’s mashed potatoes.
“I have a lot of calories in my mashed potatoes,” she said.
Hoffmaster will serve eight people on Thanksgiving, but on Wednesday she said it was the best day for her and 3-year-old granddaughter Sofie to finish off their shopping list.
“It’s not bad coming out today,” she said, “even though it’s still crowded, it’s just nice to see everybody getting excited doing their last-minute shopping.”
The day before Thanksgiving is the third-busiest day of the year for the Karns food store in Derry Township. Chad Lighty, the store’s assistant manager, said the two days before Christmas are the busiest for the store near Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
Lightly said they run their Thanksgiving specials for two weeks to cater to both the early birds and the last-minute shoppers.
“Our competitors are going to have it on sale so we want to have it on sale,” he said. “We just want to have the best price overall.”
Jim Dennis, the store’s meat manager, said last-minute shoppers are forced to take fresh turkeys because frozen ones need time to thaw.
He said folks searching for a turkey should look for one with a broad breast. He said those are the ones with the most meat.
