Most people look forward to the holidays but not the extra pounds that often accompany those delicious dinners and treats.

There is a way to enjoy the festivities without sabotaging your fitness plans.

First, stay active by using exercise to offset the extra calories.

You don’t have to hit the gym, cleaning the house, dancing or even walking around the mall can raise your heart rate.

Also, don’t skip breakfast. According to experts, starting your day with breakfast can give you more control over your appetite.

Watch your portions — try not to overfill your plate.

Experts recommend sticking with holiday favorites and skipping foods you can have all year round.

While you need to watch what you eat, also watch how fast you eat. Enjoy each bite and put your fork down in between each bite.

Finally, go easy on alcohol.

The calories in wine, beer and liquor can add up pretty quickly.

Go one and one, alternating each alcoholic beverage with a glass of water. It will help you to stay hydrated, healthier and help to avoid making a round of post-party apologies.
