PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Federal investigators say they are running down a number of leads in connection with the explosion of a package in a Philadelphia apartment.
The Tuesday morning explosion injured a 62-year-old man who authorities say needed surgery but is now in stable condition. He suffered injuries to his hand, face and body.
The head of the Philadelphia office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives says they are treating the package involved as a “suspected explosive device.” It’s been sent to an ATF laboratory for analysis.
ATF Special Agent Sam Rabadi says the package exploded upon being opened. He says the investigation is still in its infancy and the motive is not known.
He says it’s not clear when the package arrived at the home but was opened about 4 a.m. Tuesday.
