Author Spotlight: Gene Barr’s A Civil War Captain and His Lady

The main structure of the book is a series of more than 70 letters between Josiah Moore, an Irish immigrant and an officer in an Illinois infantry unit during the Civil War, and Jennie Lindsay, the daughter of one of Peoria’s leading families. It is important to note that it is extremely uncommon to have both sides of this correspondence from this period. The letters show the blossoming relationship between the two during this turbulent time. Josiah’s letters offer a deeply personal glimpse into army life as he fights through some of the bloodiest battles of the war.
