EMIGSVILLE, Pa. (WHTM) – A state trooper shot and killed a driver on Interstate 83 in York County after the man fled a traffic stop and tried to drag the trooper into the concrete median barrier, police said.

Corporal Ryan Lawrence, a state police spokesman, said the trooper stopped the driver Tuesday afternoon for an undisclosed traffic violation in the southbound lanes near the Emigsville exit at mile marker 24.

When the man fled, Lawrence said the trooper became stuck to the left side of the vehicle and was dragged about three-tenths of a mile. He said the driver then tried to drag the trooper’s body into the median barrier, “causing the high probability of death to the trooper.”

The trooper “while in fear for his safety and the public at large, fired his department-issued weapon, striking and mortally wounding the violator,” Lawrence wrote in a news release.

Authorities did not disclose the number of shots fired by the trooper.

Lawrence said the man was given immediate medical attention in an attempt to save his life, but he died at the scene. His name hasn’t been released.

The trooper sustained injuries that do not appear to be life-threatening.

“He’s a highly trained trooper and he did exactly what he needed to do,” Lawrence told reporters. “He’s out here to protect the public and I’m absolutely glad and happy for him and his family, as well as the state police family, that we’re not investigating the death of a Pennsylvania state trooper today.”

The incident closed four miles of I-83 southbound between Emigsville and the Strinestown exit at mile marker 28. One northbound lane was blocked in the Emigsville area.
