Harrisburg teen pulled from house fire dies at hospital

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – A 15-year-old girl has died from injuries she received in a house fire.

Shanice Johnson died at a hospital on Sunday, Harrisburg Fire Chief Brian Enterline said.

Johnson and a 7-year-old girl were trapped on the second floor of the home in the 2500 block of Barkley Lane when firefighters arrived late Wednesday. Firefighters pulled the girls from the house and both were flown to Penn State Hershey Medical Center for treatment of smoke inhalation.

Three others in the home – a 10-year-old boy, and 19-year-old man, and a woman – escaped on their own. The fire chief said the woman and teenager were treated for moderate smoke inhalation and released from a hospital. The 10-year-old did not need any treatment.

The cause has not been determined, but investigators said a multi-plug power strip was in the spot where the fire started in a basement bedroom.

Enterline said this is the first fire death in the city since the tragic fire at 625 Forrest Street on October 18, 2010 that claimed five lives.
