ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. (WHTM) – Jerry Freeman took time Thursday to reflect at the Elizabethtown Area Veterans Memorial.
“These are people who gave their lives so we have the freedoms that we have today,” he said.
Freeman is not a veteran, but he is a member of the American Legion in Elizabethtown, and he’s helping to lead a charge to spruce up the monument at the corner of Spruce and Washington streets.
Freeman said the idea for the revitalization started a couple of years ago when the memorial was vandalized. Now, money is being raised to add a walkway, new shrubbery, and an updated flagpole.
Bob Murphy, a corporal when he served with the Marines in Vietnam, is also helping with the project.
“You often hear the phrase ‘some gave all and all gave some.’ This is for the some who gave all,” he said.
The committee plans to raise $25,000 by selling pavers and getting donations. The goal is to have everything done for their next Memorial Day celebration.
“We respect our veterans,” Murphy said. “We honor our veterans and we respect the freedom they gained for us.”
“We need to do whatever we can to keep the veterans in the forefront of our people’s minds,” Freeman added. “The only way to do that is to keep this noticeable and keep it looking good.”
