Unemployment compensation reforms signed into law

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Gov. Tom Wolf has signed legislation to update Pennsylvania’s unemployment compensation law.

The new law makes roughly 44,000 seasonal workers – including construction workers, roofers and others who are frequently laid off during certain times of the year – eligible for unemployment benefits.

The law also increases penalties on those who make false statements to obtain benefits, and it increases fines on employers who commit unemployment compensation fraud.

It’s estimated the reforms will save Pennsylvania’s unemployment compensation system about $1.5 billion during the next decade.
