YORK, Pa. (WHTM) – An 18-year-old who was fatally shot Tuesday night was a student at William Penn Senior High School.
A district spokeswoman said Eugene Hillian III was also a member of the Bearcat football team. She said the district has made counselors available to students and staff.
Hillian was shot five times in the chest in the first block of East Maple Street and died at the scene.
“In a thousand words, you just really can’t say. It’s heartbreaking, you know. It’s just sad,” said Gwen Banks, a close family friend.
“We didn’t know if it was gunshots, at first. I mean, it was loud, but you hear loud noises around here all the time, so I wasn’t expecting to look out and see that at all,” Amanda Leland, a neighbor, said.
Police said a large crowd of people witnessed the shooting, but no one has come forward to help with their investigation.
“We believe that it wasn’t a random act of violence, that there was a reason that person was targeted,” police Chief Wes Kahley said.
Police this week made the decision to bring back neighborhood units to patrol and take care of problems in designated areas, including the spot where Hillian was killed.
“We’re concerned. We’re doing things to try and change that, and we’ll continue to work hard to do that, but again, we need the community’s cooperation,” Kahley said.
