HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – A Harrisburg man is headed to trial for carjacking a woman in the parking lot of the Walmart store in Swatara Township last month.
All charges against 45-year-old Michael Ortiz were held for court after a preliminary hearing Wednesday.
Police say Ortiz was being chased by security officers after an attempted theft when he entered a woman’s car and demanded she drive him from the store. He also threatened the woman and her passenger by claiming he had something that would give them HIV.
When the car reached a red light at the intersection of Grayson and Mushroom Hill roads, the female passenger exited the car, pulled her handgun, and demanded that Ortiz get out, police said. Ortiz stepped out of the car and struggled with the woman for the gun. She fired at least one shot and he fled.
Neither woman was harmed.
Ortiz surrendered to police two days later and was arrested for robbery, kidnapping, and related charges. He remains in the Dauphin County Prison on $100,000 bail.
