LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) – A Florida woman who was drunk when she drove into oncoming traffic and caused a fatal crash in Lancaster County will serve up to 15 years in prison.
Patricia Halgash was ordered to serve 4 years and 3 days to 15 years in prison for the March 2014 crash that killed 71-year-old Sharon Mulhatten.
Halgash was convicted on counts of vehicular homicide while DUI, aggravated assault by vehicle while DUI and DUI.
In court Thursday, Judge Jeffery Wright scolded Halgash for lying under oath during her trial and called her conduct at the scene of the crash “callous.”
Halgash admitted to police that she had been drinking at a bar and had taken prescription medications before she veered into oncoming traffic on Old Philadelphia Pike in East Lampeter Township, striking Mulhatten’s Chevy Caprice nearly head-on.
Mulhatten’s son, 54, suffered multiple injuries, including a torn aorta and broken leg.
Halgash claimed her primary concern after the crash was the safety of the Mulhattens, but Assistant District Attorney Maria Cusick countered it, saying that on the night of the crash, Halgash grabbed her personal belongings from her Mercedes and did not call 911.
Judge Wright added that Halgash went to the Mulhattens’ vehicle, saw the condition of the two Mulhatten and her son and left without calling for help.
“Rarely have I seen conduct more callous than that,” said Judge Wright.
