Harrisburg River Rescue stresses ‘turn around, don’t drown’ ahead of heavy rains

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – The American Red Cross emergency app contains a lot of important and useful information designed to help people prepare for, respond to, and recover from floods and other disasters.

Real-time alerts and warnings are also available for those driving in an area that has flooding or standing water. The app alerts drivers they are approaching a dangerous situation and they should turn around.

Harrisburg River Rescue will be monitoring the heavy rainfall over the next few days.

“If we get a lot of rainfall and we start to get flooding in the city, that will be our first priority,” Chief Frank Egresitz said.

Egresitz says people continue to make one big mistake in such conditions: running through standing water. This is often an issue at places like Cameron and Paxton streets, as well as other flood-prone parts of the city.

The American Red Cross emergency app is available for download on devices through the app store.
