Oldest Living Virginia Tech alumnus returns for Homecoming week

Oldest living alumnus (WSLS)

BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) – Homecoming activities have been taking place all week at Virginia Tech leading up to Saturday’s game against East Carolina University.

Cecil Balderson, who is now 103 years old, was in the Corps of Cadets from 1932 to 1934.

Back then, the university was called Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College and Polytechnic Institute or VPI

Balderson was forced to leave to help his family during the Great Depression, but said he still holds memories of Virginia Tech close to his heart, especially his time in the glee club.

“We could sing if we wanted to and I had a valid decent voice, if I do say so myself, and I so say so myself,” recalled Balderson.

In the end he’s still a proud Hokie.

“I really think a lot of this school and I hope it continues to be a great school like it has been in the past,” Balderson said.

Balderson will turn 104 years old on October 4.
