HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is once again asking for input into its annual fishing license button. Proposed designs for 2017 include several plain colors, including red, green, brown, teal and burgundy. Several patterns are also proposed, including Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout and Pink Camo.
The buttons are a throwback to decades ago when the commission offered collectible fishing buttons each season. The modern version, re-introduced in 2014, has been offered to valid license holders for an additional $5. The buttons, measuring 1.75″ are then customized to include an individual’s fishing license (CID) number. The 2014 version of the button was blue. In the following two years, design contests were held, with Pink winning in 2015 and a Brook Trout pattern selected by a majority of voters in 2016.
Online voting will continue through October 7, 2016, with the winning design placed on sale beginning December 1, 2016. Those who purchase the button can expect a three-week wait to receive the button in the mail, due to production demands and customization.
According to the Fish and Boat Commission, new regulations now allows anglers to display the button alone on the outside of their clothing as proof of a valid license. However, individuals are still required to have a traditional paper fishing license in their possession.
