Popular tavern’s next course: bankruptcy

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – The future of a popular West Shore tavern is going from an auction block to federal bankruptcy court.

An owner of Coakley’s in New Cumberland avoided a tax sale in Cumberland County late Wednesday by filing for Chapter 13 bankruptcy protection in federal bankruptcy court in Harrisburg.

Legal paperwork filed by owner Jana Michelle Hogg means the popular tavern and restaurant, closed since the summer of 2014, can’t be sold in a tax sale by the Cumberland County Tax Claim Bureau.

Tavern owners were delinquent in paying two years worth of property taxes.  The tavern could have been sold to a buyer willing to cover the tax bill, a reported $59,000.  But the 11th hour bankruptcy filing ended the tax sale plans.
