Harrisburg house fire leads to drug investigation

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Police say their investigation into what caused a fire in a vacant house uncovered an illegal marijuana growing operation.

Officials said large amounts of black smoke were billowing out of the house in the 1900 block of State Street as they responded around 8:40 a.m. Wednesday.

Once the fire was out, police went inside to investigate. They said it appears several electric heating lamps in a second-floor grow room were connected to the same outlet.

They’re looking to speak with the owner.

Fire Chief Brian Enterline said the fire spread rapidly because the walls were covered with plastic and other materials used in the marijuana operation.

He said one firefighter was taken to a hospital for evaluation and was later released.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 717-255-3181.
