Feds: Ex-president embezzled $22K from union local

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – A former president of a union local at the Letterkenny Army Depot in Chambersburg is expected to plead guilty to charges he embezzled $22,000 by writing checks to himself.

John Kauffman Jr. is charged with mail fraud in a criminal information filed Wednesday in federal court.

Kauffman, 36, of Morgansville, Maryland, was president of the National Federation of Federal Employees Local 1442 when he allegedly stole the funds between September 2013 and July 2014, according to U.S. Attorney Peter Smith.

The court document alleges that Kauffman wrote 24 checks on a union bank account that were payable to himself and disguised the checks as payments for legitimate expenses.

Smith said the fraud was discovered in January 2015 during an audit of the union’s finances. He said Kauffman is no longer employed at Letterkenny Army Depot.

The plea agreement is pending a judge’s approval.
