ENOLA, Pa. (WHTM) — The East Pennsboro School Board has voted to continue operating the swimming pool located in the Middle School. The future of the four-decades-old pool has been in question, as administrators try to overcome a budget deficit.
The narrow 5-4 vote came Wednesday evening, following an impassioned public comment period, where many citizens supporting the pool spoke at length. Previously, supporters have cited the need for the pool in their community, saying there are few other places to conduct swimming lessons or competitive swimming meets.
East Pennsboro Area School District Superintendent Dr. Jay Burkhart says it would cost around $600,000 in renovations to keep the pool, plus an additional $110,000 a year to maintain it. A potential partnership with the West Shore YMCA has been discussed, and supporters have vowed to raise funds to support pool operations.
