New branch of visitors bureau focuses on attracting sports-related events

HARRISBURG, Pa (WHTM) – The Midstate is no stranger to large events. Concerts are big, but if one group has its way, big-time sports is the future.

The Mecum Auto Auction is taking over the Farm Show Complex this week. The buzz created locally by national-scope events like it prompted the formation of the Hershey-Harrisburg Sports & Events Authority, a new arm of the regional visitors bureau focused on attracting more big sports-related events.

“There’s things that we want to do with the NCAA. We want to look at some NCAA championship-type events. I’ve been personally in touch with UFC for a number of years now to try to get them here to the Giant Center,” said Gregg Cook of the Hershey-Harrisburg Sports Events Authority.

The authority believes the surface is only scratched. Other sports spectacles draw huge crowds and cash.

The pitch for Hershey-Harrisburg is now a fastball cutting down the idea that a smaller city can’t compete with bigger stops on the map.
