Midstate Memories: Preserving History

On today’s Midstate Memories segment, Joanne Hess Siegrist of the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society was talking about collecting, preserving, and documenting historic photos.

“Photographs are are a window into the past and stories of the past soften the rough edges of today’s hot issues,” tells Siegrist.

We asked her what someone should do if they plan to harvest old photos themselves.

“First, when collecting, they need to state the five “W’s” of each photo: As a caption, write who, what, where, when, and why for each photograph. Next, they need to learn methods for copying photos for top clarity, either using a digital camera or portable scanner. The most important thing to do is create a high quality copy without damaging the original.”

Hear the rest of Joanne’s tips in the video above.
