ST. JOSEPH, Mich. (WOOD) – Two bailiffs were fatally shot by an inmate at the Berrien County Courthouse Monday before that inmate was also killed, sheriff’s authorities have confirmed.
A deputy was also injured in the shooting that happened around 2:15 p.m. at the courthouse on Port Street in downtown St. Joseph, Berrien County Sheriff Paul Bailey said. That deputy is in stable condition and is being treated at a local hospital.
A civilian was also injured in the incident, but it’s unclear if he or she sustained a gunshot wound. A news release from the sheriff’s office listed the civilian in stable condition as well.
Few details surrounding the shooting have been released, including the names of the victims and exactly where in the courthouse the shooting occurred.
During a news conference Monday afternoon, Bailey said some “brave officers” were able to take down the suspect, who also has not been named.
