HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Investigators are releasing new information on the Dauphin County man who was killed about one week ago.

Investigators said Shamir Hunter, 19, is in custody and has been charged in beating Steven Esworthy, 32, to death.

Hunter was also charged with theft for breaking into several cars according to police.

On his Facebook page, Hunter bragged about a mugging on June 19th, the same day Esworthy was killed.

Last Sunday in the 1200 block of Green Street Esworthy was walking alone to a family member’s home when he was killed by a single blow to the back of his head and neck.

Dauphin County Coroner Graham Hetrick said it appears the robber ambushed Esworthy from behind and struck him extremely hard with a piece of 1¼” x 1¼” oak lumber.

The Esworthy family put out a statment:

“We are comforted to know that Harrisburg is safer with the suspect no longer at large. We thank the Harrisburg Bureau of Police for their extraordinary efforts in resulting a quick arrest.”

The family also has a page where people can donate to Esworthy’s funeral costs.
