HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – An Elizabethtown man is accused of stealing from his elderly father.
Jason M. Helman, 36, had power of attorney while his 70-year-old father was in a personal care home in Hershey. Police say instead of paying his father’s bills, Helman stole as much as $12,000.
He was charged by summons with one count of theft by unlawful taking.
The Dauphin County Elder Abuse Task Force shared details of the case on Wednesday with Dauphin County commissioners.
The task force said it has seen a 90 percent increase in elder abuse reports over the last two years. Members warned it’s often a family member or friend who takes advantage of an elderly victim.
“That’s why we recommend that even when it’s a family member that they have that check and balances, more than one person, just so they can kind of keep an eye on each other,” Protective Services supervisor Elena Walsh said. “It tends to be the people that they know and trust the most.”
