HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Police are searching for 22-year-old Jabree Chambers who was charged with escape on June 1.
They spotted him Tuesday afternoon and swarmed an Uptown neighborhood, but they came up empty.
Eyes in the sky and on the streets, officers tried to track down the wanted man starting just before 4:30 p.m.
“It’s just dangerous out here. It’s getting terrible,” said Martha Steiner. She lives on Fifth Street near Schuylkill Street, in the heart of the search area.
She saw a man in a red shirt that police were chasing.
“He ran, he jumped here, and then he ran over there at that old house right there,” Steiner said, showing ABC27 News where the suspect bolted through her yard and across Fifth Street.
Chambers is wanted for escaping custody.
In December, court records show he was arrested and charged with two counts of receiving stolen property and drug felonies.
Police say they stopped his car, a gold Cadillac, Tuesday afternoon, knowing about the previous escape charge, and he ran.
A nearby Pennsylvania State Police chopper joined the chase.
“I was out back cleaning my garage and I look up, standing right there,” Bryan Gonzalez, who also lives on Fifth Street, said of the helicopter hovering above.
“Just saw a helicopter up around doing circles around,” his 8-year-old niece Autumn Bordner said. “I was like, ‘What’s going on?'”
After about a half-hour of looking, using a K-9 unit and cops on foot, police packed up without finding Chambers. Later, the chopper returned to making the rounds.
Steiner hoped for a resolution.
“It’s getting terrible,” she said. “It’s getting scary. You can’t even come out here anymore.”
Chambers now faces new charges for running from police.
