Papenfuse shuts down PennLive reporters at news conference

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Mayor Eric Papenfuse made good on his promise to shut out Patriot-News and PennLive reporters during a Monday press event.

A handful of PennLive reporters showed up for city’s announcement of Fourth of July events. The reporters were not turned away, but the mayor did not answer their questions.

Christine Vendel asked Papenfuse about the budget, which started a string of scathing comments from the mayor.

“I may tell somebody else if they like to ask, I’m not actually taking questions from PennLive,” Papenfuse said.

“I’m a legitimate journalist trying to do a job,” Vendel said.

“You are, Christine, and I feel sorry for you, but the reality is you work for an employer to which I do not intend to draw traffic,” Papenfuse responded. “I feel PennLive has a clicks-for-cash business model and spreads hate through its comment section.”

PennLive’s John Micek also tried to ask questions with no luck.

“I’m done,” Papenfuse said. “Other question from other media sources?”
