Pa. House votes for higher bingo prizes

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Volunteer fire companies and other nonprofit groups that offer bingo nights will be allowed to double prize payouts under a bill approved Tuesday by the state House.

House Bill 1334 would increase limits for prize payouts from $250 to $500 for any one game of bingo; from $2,000 to $4,000 for jackpot games; and from $4,000 to $8,000 the total amount of prizes awarded in a day.

It also removes restrictions on how often groups may have bingo games, allows non-members to call numbers, and permits groups to advertise their prize amounts.

The bill’s author, Rep. Kate Klunk (R-York), said bingo’s popularity has been declining since the state legalized casino gaming and groups are struggling to bring in the funds they once did.

The bill is awaiting consideration in the Senate.
