NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH)– Politicians are demanding changes to how your food is labeled. A big food fight is brewing between them and companies. They’re trying to make the information on labels easier to digest and this would impact anyone who has ever bought anything with the word natural on it.
Tuesday in New Haven, Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro and Senator Richard Blumenthal will be in the aisles at the Edge of the Woods grocery store. They say they’re calling on the Food and Drug Administration to define the word natural.
The reason for all this is because the Consumer Reports just found many people believe when they see the word natural on meat and processed foods that think it doesn’t have artificial ingredients, growth hormones, genetically modified ingredients, or antibiotics and that’s not the case.
“Consumers deserve accurate and meaningful information about what they eat when a label says natural it should have a meaning that is accurate. And understandable by consumers,” said Blumenthal.
DeLauro is introducing the legislation in the House, while Blumenthal is doing the same in the Senate. They’ll be at Edge of the Woods Tuesday morning at 10:30.
