YORK, Pa. (WHTM) – The Memorial Day weekend kicks off trips and summer vacations. ABC27 News has precautions to help you keep your home secure while you’re gone.
York Area Regional police say there’s an easy checklist to follow to deter burglars while you’re gone:
- If you’re leaving your car at home, make sure to hide those car keys.
- Lock the outdoor shed as well as all doors and windows.
- If you’re going away more than a few days, stopping the mail is vital.
- Finally, there’s power in numbers. Have a neighbor watch the house for you or submit a vacation request to the police. They may be able to stop by and check on your home for you.
Sergeant Peter Montgomery said it’s not just the exterior of your house, you can also keep the interior safe by unplugging the toaster to prevent a fire.
