LANCASTER, Pa. (WHTM) – Friday was a busy day at Long’s Park.
On Saturday, the popular park will play host to the 64th annual Sertoma Chicken Barbeque.
“We eat, sleep, and drink chicken this week,” said Debra Martin Berkoski, who works at Long’s Park for the City of Lancaster.
Organizers from the Sertoma Club plan to sell 24,000 dinners on Saturday. Friday was a day to make sure everything was lined up and where it needed to be.
“We get delivery of the food,” Megan Tomsheck, an organizer for the event, explained. “We get the pits ready to go.”
This year, organizers have been forced to prepare for almost certain rain on Saturday. Tomsheck told ABC27 News they will cook their chickens about an hour earlier than usual in an effort to beat the rain.
Friday also was a hard day for Tom Goodhart of the Sertoma Club. His job was to organize the drinks.
Goodhart has volunteered for the annual BBQ for 15 years and knows that Saturday will put his work ethic to the test.
“Saturday is the hard day,” he said.
Seventy percent of the proceeds help with projects in Long’s Park.
The BBQ runs from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
