PinnacleHealth: Heartburn

Heartburn is a common problem in western cultures, but if it continues over time or if the symptoms become more frequent or severe, it may be a sign of another digestive health problem.

Heartburn happens when stomach acid travels up the esophagus and causes irritation.

“Heartburn is a very common symptom of Gastroesophagel Reflux Disease, or GERD, and can feel like a burning in the chest or throat. A sour or bitter taste, and sometimes a cough, may accompany the burning feeling. Bile reflux is a less common occurrence but can feel exactly like acid and occurs when bile, which is made in the liver/gall bladder, is released into the stomach and refluxes back into the esophagus,” tells Dr. John Lazar.
