Gov. Wolf signs bill to help end abusive marriages

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – Gov. Tom Wolf has signed legislation to help Pennsylvanians get out of abusive marriages.

House Bill 12 says the person filing for divorce can object to court-mandated counseling if they have a protection from abuse order or if they were the victim of a personal injury crime.

The bill also allows courts to presume the other party has given consent to the divorce.

Currently, if one party does not agree to the divorce, a couple must have up to three face-to-face counseling sessions and wait up to two years before the divorce is final.
