Girls on the Run is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. The program was founded in Charlotte, NC in 1996 by Molly Barker and is a physical activity-based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd – 8th grades. Girls on the Run International is the parent organization to 225 councils in 49 states and the District of Columbia, serving more than 179,000 girls annually. Girls on the Run served its millionth girl in 2015 and is celebrating its 20th birthday in 2016.
“I never imagined we’d be here, but I did know, even at that time, that the program was touching something deep in people’s hearts and minds. The program gets to the core of what most humans need…a safe space to be themselves. A place where they know they are loved and accepted just as they are. We tell every girl, You are beautiful and wonderful, just the way you are. Who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?” tells Barker.
