There are over 600,000 knee replacements performed in the US every year with a portion of those being partial knee replacements. A knee has three compartments. Traditionally, in a total knee replacement all three compartments are resurfaced. In a partial knee replacement an individual compartment is resurfaced, either the medial, lateral or patellofemoral compartment.
Total knee surgery is a longer procedure and has a longer hospital stay and recovery. Partial knee replacement patients stay in the hospital overnight and go home the following day. Recovery, resolution of pain, and release back to activity are reached significantly faster than total knee surgery.
