HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) – A Steelton woman will spend up to 40 years in prison for fatally beating and stabbing a man in January 2014.
Darla M. Carrington, 34, was ordered to serve 20-40 years at sentencing Tuesday before Dauphin County Judge Deborah Curcillo, according to the district attorney’s office.
Carrington pleaded guilty in January to third-degree murder.
She initially claimed the victim, 41-year-old Dennis J. Green Jr., tried to rape her before she stabbed him multiple times and bludgeoned him with a hammer, but authorities said her injuries and the crime scene at 220 Elm St. did not support her claim of self-defense.
The police investigation also revealed a prior stabbing incident in 2011 in which Carrington stabbed another man, claiming he, too, had tried to rape her.
Prosecutors said Carrington was raped as a teenager and suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, but while her illness and crack cocaine use explains the circumstances of the killing, it does not make her any less dangerous. In asking for the maximum sentence, they noted she committed the murder while her two children were in the home.
Curcillo denied a defense request to allow Carrington to have contact with her children while she’s in prison.
