Cause of Middletown apartment fire ruled accidental

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. (WHTM) – Investigators say the cause of a massive apartment fire in Middletown was smoking-related.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives looked investigated the fire at The Village of Pineford apartment complex and determined the fire was started by a tenant who was smoking on the north side of the building’s roof.

The tenant is not being identified.

Crews were called out to the building fire on April 3. At least 80 units were damaged with several people displaced.

Total damages have been estimated to $8 million.
