STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – Former Penn State University president Bryce Jordan has died. He was 91.

The university confirmed his death Wednesday.

The Centre Daily Times reported that Jordan’s wife, Barbara, a former reporter and editor at the paper, said he died Tuesday at his home in Austin, Texas.

The Bryce Jordan Center arena on the State College campus is named for Jordan, who served as president of the university from 1983 to 1990.

Born in Clovis, New Mexico and raised in Abilene, Texas, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

During his tenure, he was credited with having launched a fundraising campaign that raised hundreds of millions of dollars, strengthened recruitment of students, faculty and staff, and helping to support economic development in the commonwealth.
