YORK, Pa. (WHTM) – Samuel Rivera, who is part of the group “Stop the Violence” in York, found himself close to gun violence Sunday night.
“It’s heartbreaking just hearing gunshots two blocks away from where I live,” he told ABC 27 News.
Rivera said he heard six or seven shots Sunday night in Girard Park.
Police said 25-year-old Wayne Weedon Jr. was killed and two others were injured in the shooting.
Rivera said he was one of the first people on the scene.
“I (saw) a kid right here laying down, dead,” he said. “Then (there was) another one laying up here, then one running up the field because he got shot in the leg. It’s heartbreaking.”
Detectives said witnesses reported an argument before the shots were fired. Police believe the victims were targeted based on evidence they found in the park.
Across the street, a van had its window shot out.
Judith Wells, who also lives across the street from Girard Park, told ABC27 News the park was busy Sunday night. She said it’s scary to have the violence happen so close to home.
“A 17-year-old got shot in the foot and 20-year-old was laying right in front of my car shot three times,” Wells said.
Police said injured victims were in stable condition and expected to survive.
Investigators are still trying to get a description of the shooters.
