Firefighters rule York garage fire as arson

YORK, Pa. (WHTM) — Firefighters said the fire that damaged two garages in York was intentionally set.

Piece by piece friends and family clean up the reamins of their burned down property.

“It doesn’t make any sense,” Cecil Anderson, a neighbor, said.

Nothing electrical could have started the fire, so investigators have ruled it arson.

“It’s ridiculous. I’ll tell you that much. Seems like here lately or last couple of years there’s been quite a few fires in York. Arson related. I just don’t know what people are thinking,” Anderson said.

The fire happened just after 5 a.m Wednesday, starting at a garage behind W. Princess Street, and spreading to another garage across the alley.

“Somebody came and knocked on the door and said there was a fire. We weren’t sure if it was in the house or what, but we came out and it was just a mess,” Chad Koontz, another neighbor, said.
But for these neighbors, whose property was untouched, it still hits too close to home.

“It’s not a great neighborhood. It’s really not. Sometimes there’s shots fired, and now they’re setting stuff on fire. It’s time to get out,” Koontz said.

No one was injured. The fire caused an estimated $10,000 worth of damage.

If you have any information on the suspect or suspects, you are asked to call York City Police.
