NEWPORT, Pa. (WHTM) – Prom gets expensive. Factor in tickets, a dress, and all the bells and whistles and families can rack up hundreds of dollars, or more, in costs.
A group in Perry County is working to make it easier for those who might not be able to afford everything.
From dresses to shoes, to accessories and even hair and makeup, the Family Life Center in Newport is a one stop prom shop. This is their 10th year holding a prom closet.
In 2006, there were eight dresses here. Thanks to donations, this year there are about 600 dresses to choose from; all of them free.
The closet is open to everyone, regardless of where you live. Just come in and pick out a dress.
For some volunteers, it’s a personal victory to be able to help out.
“I had to wait until everything was on clearance like the weekend before prom, so I would have loved to have a place to come to like this where everything was taken care of and I didn’t have to worry about anything”, volunteer Erin Deaven said.
The event started Friday and wrapped up at 2 p.m. Saturday. In total, 40 dresses were taken to new homes, but organizers say every girl walked away with a gift bag of makeup, perfume, and hair products.
