EPHRATA, Pa. (WHTM) – On Wednesday, PennDOT maintenance crews closed Bitzer’s Mill Covered Bridge in West Earl Township, Lancaster County.

Bridge inspectors say the bridge, which goes over the Conestoga River, is damaged and unsafe for carrying traffic.

The damage is likely from large vehicles passing through the covered bridge.

It will remain closed as crews evaluate a the damage and create a plan for a “major rehabilitation project.”

The single-lane bridge was originally built in 1846. More than 600 vehicles cross the bridge daily.

Drivers can follow a detour around the bridge following Covered Bridge Road, Farmersville Road (SR 1025), Metzler Road, Peach Road and Cider Mill Road.
