Students stay off cell phones, get discounts

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – A mobile application is helping students stay off their phones in class.

An app called, “Pocket Points,” is available for University of New Mexico and Central New Mexico Community College students, allowing them to earn points toward discounts for keeping their phones locked in class.

“Yeah, it helps. I’m not going to lie,” said UNM student Octavio Arambula.

It works based on the user’s location. If the user is on campus, he or she just has to open the app, lock their phone and keep it that way long enough to earn points.

“It puts that mentality that you want to earn points instead of being on your phone,” Arambula said.

“It is something I’ve never seen before. It’s kind of new,” said UNM student Angel Cortez.

Local businesses say they’re benefitting from the app too.

“I think there’s more corporate businesses that do it but for us, we’re small so that name recognition and getting people in the door is huge for us,” said Sarah Schoen, general manager of Humble Coffee.
