Ammonia leak in Lancaster County

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. (WHTM) – Lancaster County’s hazmat team, Rheems fire department, and other fire departments are responding an ammonia leak at Agrifrost in Rheems.

Lancaster County emergency dispatchers said it happened around 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the building on West Harrisburg Avenue.

Some people are being treated for exposure to the gas, but dispatchers couldn’t say how many.

People are being asked to shelter in place.

ABC27’s Andrew Forgotch was told a nursing home one of the locations being told to shelter in place.

Officials said the ammonia leaked from an old pipe in the building, which used to be a corn plant.

Two people were inside doing work on the building. They were taken for treatment but are okay.

A group of kids were playing on a nearby ball field and were told to leave the area.
